This L shaped Art Deco Cinema building used to have one theatre screen on the rear side of the building, with a large balcony on the first floor and smaller balconies on the side. The client wants to turn the single screen theatre into a multiplex with a shopping mall facility attached to it. By placing 5 additional floors in the large theatre box, attached with each other visually by a receding atria and large north facing window, we managed to create an art deco shopping experience. The multiplex screens are placed on the top floor and three different restaurants are placed on the receding terraces, all overlooking the public park opposite the building.

The original art deco character of the place was maintained while improving user experiences and enhancing natural lighting by adding a north facing art deco window, in style with the large entrance staircase and entrance doors with M-shaped handles. The new chandeliers in the front and rear atria resemble old features and are designed in the art deco time spirit.

The existing front atrium will be renovated and a new receding atrium is proposed on the rear side of the building which is lit from a north facing art deco 3 story high window.

Escalators are placed in the receding atrium of the department store in the rear of the building. From the escalators the visitors will pass the new art deco window while having a large overview of all the floors. By placing puzzled parking solution of Kraus Parking in the basement, a long and large ramp was avoided, such that more space could be given to the department store on the ground floor.

A cluster of elevators is placed in the centre of the building to service the front flag ship store as well are the department store on the rear. A separate elevator is located near the main entrance to facilitate easy access to the first roof top restaurant which is build around a court yard

The original building has 3 floors in the front part and a large open box in the rear for the theater. The proposal provides additional floors on the rear to optimize the maximum build up area permissible. Puzzled parking is designed in the basement in order to avoid a large, space consuming ramp.

The proposal compromises of a flag ship store in the front building around the existing atrium, and a new shopping centre with department stores and small stores in the rear.
