Old school new building! With the need for expansion, LFIM decided to move to a bigger space with better facilities. As the first ones to get in the space, Architectural consultancy was also a part of design process. All the entries, play areas, including some of the façade features, like the double height cut-out overlooking kid's play area underneath, were proposed by us. Coordinating outside with the inside and bringing in the atmosphere of a school was one of the base thought behind all the design decisions.
A wooden box is proposed at the entrance, overlooking the field. This serves as kids play zone above with parents waiting underneath. Open well metal ceiling is proposed in the play area, keeping in mind the function of the space, to avoid dents or damages in the ducts running through the ceiling.
Relocating and upgrading the school to accommodate 200 kids in a new surrounding yet retaining the character of the old school, was the main design challenge along with the tight timeline. Blurring the boundaries between spaces, with lot of greens throughout the school was a dominating design element. Optimizing the use of the area, by creating interactive pockets, were some of the design strategies.
Second floor is completely dedicated to Primary section. With the corridor flowing through, we have tried to blur the boundaries between the hallways and classrooms.
The hallways are designed with seating and shelves, making pause points in the route. Break-out space is broken down to create pockets. The framed glass partitions of the classroom brings in day light, connecting the inside to the outside.
Fourth floor is dominated with Secondary section, with some classrooms flowing on the above floor. Study rooms are planned in between the classrooms and corridor giving them dedicated space for group studies. The entire boxing in the hallway is designed with seating and lockers with interactive corners.
The canteen and other common spaces like breakout rooms, music spaces are planned such that they fall in the middle of the school, on the third floor, giving an easy access to all the kids.
