Home to a prominent industrialist, this 5000 sq. ft apartment on the prime Altamount Road is a modern home with a trace of classic post-colonial charm. The principal architect developed a layered array of semi-private spaces by opening the house to the vast stretch of the north facade and bringing in abundant natural light.
The space ushers in with an oak wood veneer-clad volume and forms a wooden wrap from the entrance to the dining providing a cohesive element to all the semi-private areas. The depressions in this volume, treated with wooden slats serve as a backdrop for the client’s art collection.
The formal living layered with the patio, study, and dining consists of a material palette that boasts a combination of wood, muted tones of fabrics, pristine white marble, brass, and bespoke furniture.
A dark wood ceiling with a converging pattern defines the entrance inside the residence. Clever design strategies integrate and hide the client’s storage requirements, service shafts, AC grills, etc.
A continuous cove light runs above the entire wooden wrap making it loose from the ceiling. The groove patterns create seamless storage for the end user accommodating their requirements.
The powder bath clad with the ubiquitous beige marble receives a signature LMC design twist wherein the character and treatment of the marble add dimension to the bathroom. The rear side marble has a rough finish and the front side jagged marble wall has a polished finish with concealed lighting to hide a ledge wall.
The artwork for this home was selected and allocated by the principal architect based on the atmosphere of the space, colour scheme, size and the viewing distance for the painting. Large paintings are on the receding wall while the miniatures are on the wooden wrap.
A receding wall with concealed lighting is an innovative take to create a play of volumes with plain white walls. This volume also gives us a glimpse into the Den room.
A sliding door in succession with the receding wall hides behind a pocket between the storage of the den and the wall. This door completes the receding wall intersecting perfectly with the sloping wood wrap.
A cardinal room for the client, the den is designed with the best location in the apartment overlooking the sea and a gorgeous sunset. An endless vista formulates by the slope of the wooden ceiling that hides the heavy black horizontal mullion.
The sloping wooden wrap is formed by matching engineered wood flooring with veneer such that it looks like a homogeneous volume. The storage unit follows the same material palette as the rest of the room.
The bed design creates the illusion of a floating bed with a mint fabric headboard starting from the bed and ending at the ceiling.
A green nook formed by a grey volume with custom-designed art jaali on one end allows natural light to penetrate this internal pseudo patio between the living and study area.
A loose grey volume finished in textured paint surrounded by glass with wooden frames gives us a peek into the dining area. The ribbed blue unit and the blue dining chairs connect two separate spaces.
White marble steps embedded in the grey marble flooring create a continuation in the space from the living to the study.
The character of the veneer enhances by the combination of wooden slats in the depressions of this wooden volume.
The dining room is defined by bespoke furniture and a marble ledge with the internals finished in veneer inlayed with brass. The ledge acts as a serving counter when the clients entertain guests.
The continuous oak wood wrap from the entrance ends at the guest bedroom and camouflages the door to the kitchen and the powder bathroom.
A private lift lobby reflects a summary of the elements used in the interior design of the residence. Wooden slats with concealed light form the highlight of this lobby and grey marble strips continuing from these wooden slats create an inviting space for the user.
The master bedroom has two separate lavish walk-in wardrobes designed to reflect the user’s character. Each walk-in wardrobe connects to a master bathroom. Despite a similar material palette, the design and detailing create a specialised ambience for these two walk-in wardrobes.
A contemporary and luxe atmosphere is created with the herringbone flooring continuing below the wardrobe with lights highlighting the intersection between these two. Shutters finished in glossy white pu encompass this walk-in wardrobe surrounded by a cove on all four sides making the ceiling loose.
A similar design language dictates this walk-in wardrobe. The shutters are finished in veneer with seamless handles. A loose unit finished in the same veneer defines user movement in this wardrobe while providing storage for the client’s handbags, perfumes, etc.
Beautiful diamonds are created by book-matching marble surrounding the walls of this bathroom. This marble also forms a band around the flooring providing a border to the stunning rough beige tiles.
The same material palette is observed for this other bathroom wherein the slated wooden ceiling is loose from all four sides. The grooves in the ceiling seamlessly hide trapdoors designed for the services of the residence.
A blue haven, the guest bathroom has beige book-matched marble at the bottom with calming blue paint on the upper half of the walls and ceiling. The arched mirror hanging from the ceiling enabled us to keep the east view accessible.
